Places to go

For basically the past year, Bill and I have been saving and planning for a family vacation around spring break 2009. Now that we are finally getting closer to the actual date (therefore time to make reservations, book the trip, etc), we just can't decide where to go! You would think this wouldn't be such a difficult thing to do, but with such limited funds and vacation time we aren't sure when our next big trip will be. So far the plans have jumped from London to Cinqueterre (Italy), to London, to Cinqueterre, to London, to Hawaii, to Disneyland, to Rome, to Switzerland, to Mexico, to Iceland, to Sweden, to Rome...you get the picture. Whenever we start thinking about it the conversation usually ends with "we don't have to make a decision yet; let's just keep thinking about it, and when it is closer we will decide." Well it is closer.

We have made some progress. We know that our time is more limited than we were previously thinking. We basically have 10 days. We also know that some trips (London) would be just too expensive with the exchange rate and ease of purchasing (I've found that I spend much much less in countries where there is a language barrier). Other than that we have not narrowed it down at all--at this point I'm soliciting any advice people wish to give regarding vacations/personal experiences.

ooh that is a tough choice. I'm sure Paul would love to convince you to go to Ireland I'll let him explain why. FYI If you do decide on Disneyland you could totally stay at my parents house anytime. Good Luck! :o)

It's not as cosmopolitan as your other options (well, minus Disneyland), but we've really enjoyed traveling in Central America. It's easy to get there with a toddler, and you don't have to deal with a big time change. Belize is awesome if you're into diving, they speak English there, some amazing ruins to see, and it's not so touristy yet; we went to Costa Rica about three or four years ago and it was AMAZING. Fantastic for the "eco-tourism" stuff - jungle zip lines and canopy tours, incredible beaches, some of the most primitive rain forests you can imagine, etc.

Or you could go on a cruise!

Anyway, I've written way too much. Where ever you go, I'm sure you'll have fun!

There are lots of people who would love to see you in Ohio!! Just being a little selfish.

Ok Becca, you've got to break it down like we used to do when trying to decide what to order off the menu. First pick your fav out of each group (area in this case) then start crossing some off your list without looking back.

Personally, I think you could cut Italy b/c you've already been to that part of the world, and you gave a good reason for not going to London. So there you go...3 down : )

Good luck! Miss you!!!

Yeah, Ohio rocks!

LOL.

My advice on this is not to stress about it. Assume that you'll end up in all those place evenutally and just go with where it works out for this timing.

Spring break might still be pretty chilly in Sweden. And Scandanavia is EXPENSIVE!!! Actually, with the dollar situation nowadays Europe in general is pretty expensive. There are still ways to do it affordably, but it is more of a challenge.

I'd also consider Will's age. I think big city vacations are tough at that age. I mean, how much time does he really want to spend in a museum, church or other historic site? We've definitely done it, but we usually end up alternating Peter or I visiting the site while the other runs after Soren in the town square while he chases pigeons.

Check out budgettravel.com, travelzoo.com, and frommers.com. All excellent travel sites. Keep an eye out for bargain packages and go for it!

One more recommendation of a place that isn't well known here in the US but is AWESOME: Croatia. I'd seriously recommend it to every one I know. It is that great.

You'll have a blast no matter where you go!

Oh, and we're going to Honduras in late Feb - want to join us? ;-)

I say somewhere cheap! Disneyland would still be fun and a good vacation! Hey after all, we are law students! Save our money to pay back our loans ehh?

How fun...to plan an adventurous trip yeah!!! My advice was going to be to talk to Amy...but I see she has already left a wonderfully informative response...so yeah...what she said!!! Just kidding!

I will weigh in on Iceland though as I assume I am one of the few who has actually been there...it's expensive, totally not what I was expecting and everyone is very beautiful! I'm sure that helped!

If you take me with, I'll tell you where you should go. I've got great advice.

Every spring break time, I'm sick of the rain. Somewhere warm and sunny sounds great.

I was going to say Ohio but but Lis, Trish, and Marsh beat me to it. I guess that wouldn't really be a 'vacation' though...

i know i don't usually comment on your blog, but i had to put in my two cents. :) we did a europe trip a year and a half ago... we did london, paris, athens, rome, florence, and pisa. we loved them all, but i have to say that athens was definitely my favorite. there were a lot of cool things to see in athens, so it's worth the trip, but my absolute favorite day was going to an island in greece, renting a skooter, and just riding all over that little island. anyway, i vote greece. and if you can spend more time travelling the islands, i'd vote greece even more. AND almost everyone there speaks english so it was by far the easiest place to get around of all the countries.

OR... DC is really nice in the spring. :) come visit.

good luck with the decision. :)
